I noticed lately that I never hear anyone refer to their career as a “calling” anymore.
That’s not to say that those involved in careers they truly love do not feel that way. It’s just that turn of phrase has some how fallen out of popular favor.
There is something very powerful about referring to you life’s work as a “calling” — if you are indeed passionate about what you do. It is something you are destined for. You have no choice. You were put on this Earth to do it.
I feel that way about about my current job. Everyday, I have the opportunity to do what I love — collaborate with bright minds and come up with creative ideas.
I am even more passionate about my lifetime role: parenting. Not about cooking, or cleaning or coordinating schedules, or any other chores associated with raising healthy, well-balance kids. I love the actual practice of parenting… setting examples, helping to manage emotions, supporting learning, providing a moral compass, teaching compassion and socialization, and encouraging my children to explore new paths and pursue their passions relentlessly.
I can only pray that by being the right example as a parent, my children will be about to actually hear their own calling someday, and have all the tools, and PLUCK (another forgotten word!) to follow that which calls them.
